In general, cosmetics contain a number of ingredients that are harmful to our skin and also threaten the environment. Therefore, do not forget to read labels carefully and determine whether the product contains toxic compounds. Below, you will find a list showing harmful substances in cosmetics.
Harmful substances in cosmetics
The most common harmful cosmetic ingredients include:
- SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
- SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate)
- silicones,
- mineral oils,
- PEG and PPG,
- EDTA,
- formaldehyde,
- aluminium.
SLS makes shampoo, shower gel and liquid soap lather well. At the same time, it can irritate and dry out the skin, and consequently cause itching, or eczema. SLS leads to hair loss. SLES has an irritating and drying effect, but not as strong as SLS.
Silicones allow a good distribution of the cosmetic, which gives the illusion of soft skin and smooth hair. The body perceives them as foreign substances that cannot be egested. Moreover, mineral oils are designed to increase the volume of the cosmetic. They are not absorbed but stay on the skin, which disturbs the oxygen and metabolic exchange of the skin and causes the formation of comedones.
PEG and PPG give the cosmetics the consistency desired by the manufacturer. At the same time, they soften the skin, weaken the lipid barrier and probably damage the genetic structure of the cells. They are considered to be potentially carcinogenic. EDTA aims to extend the durability of cosmetics. However, it may cause allergic reactions, cough and conjunctivitis.
The vapours produced by formaldehyde irritate and in contact with the skin, the substance may cause rashes, sensitization and inflammation. Used in nail conditioners can cause separation of the plate from the nail. Formaldehyde is considered carcinogenic to humans.
Aluminium is used primarily in deodorants. It clogs the pores and, as a consequence, accumulates in the tissues, irritates the immune system and may damage other systems.
